Climbing towards the top of the U Notch Couloir in the Palisades. Sierras, California

The U Notch is an ice climb later in fall. This year's big snow year means that towards the end of July, there was plenty of hard snow in the Couloir, as well as some ice. The climb is a moderate climb. Maybe about 40 degrees. In these conditions, we were happy with a single mountain axe and aluminum alloy crampons. The U Notch Couloir is a route towards the summit of the North Palisade in the Palisades, Sierras, California.
